Tongue piercing is nothing but piercing the tongue mainly at the centre and the tip. This initially started as a ritual among certain tribes but later became a fashion among the Westerners especially among teenagers who find this cool.

Captive bead ring is worn mostly if the tongue is pierced at the tip. However, this type of piercing is not done since it causes irritation to the gums and tooth cracking. Venoms are another type of tongue piercing. Here, two piercing is made side by side in a fashionable manner.

The tongue is pierced using barbell style jewelry made of plastic or metal beads. Barbells that are too small can cause irritation since it migrates from the position it was pierced. The tongue can also accommodate large jewelry by stretching it. The only disadvantage is that over a period of time these beads fade.

Bleeding is one major drawback of tongue piercing if the needle passes through the vein while piercing. Apart from that, there are chances of bacterial infection, swelling, pain, chipped tooth and tooth loss. Disease transmission, speech interference are other aftereffects of piercing. Doctors claim that HIV can also be transmitted if the needle is not sterile.

Before having your tongue pierced, please check with your friends or relatives who have done piercing, for the professionally skilled piercer. Also, make sure that the piercer wears gloves and uses sterile equipments. If this is done, the risk of infection is lowered.
