Nipple Piercing

Nipple piercing is a process of piercing the base of the nipple. The piercing can be made at any angle but piercers suggest horizontal rather than vertical. Multiple nipple piercing is also possible by placing one on top of another. Nipple piercing normally takes around three to six months to heal completely. However, there are certain cases reported, where the healing period extends to around one to one and a half year.

The metal used and the after care taken in nipple piercing is similar to every body piercing. However, the main point of concern with nipple piercing mainly in women is the complication with breastfeeding. There is no real proof to indicate that a nipple piercing may cause problems associated with lactation. Still, it is advised to take proper after care to avoid infection and better healing. A professional piercer may decline to pierce a carrying woman because the nipple piercing can cause unwanted stress and result in complicated pregnancy.

The doctors and professional piercers suggest that a woman needs to remove the piece of nipple jewelry before breastfeeding. The presence of nipple jewelry while nursing can lead to slurping, gagging, leakage of milk from infantÆs mouth and sometimes, poor latch. A woman with previous breast implants is not recommended to pierce the nipples as this can result in further complications. After the piercing process, if a person finds any yellow secretion or pus from nipple or finds any discomfort, vomiting, inflammation or fever, he is required to report to a medical practitioner. It is always safe to go for a nipple piercing after making thorough study and evaluation on the topic.
